About Arthritis (Osteoarthritis)
As people age, stiffness in their joints usually appears. These
joints begin to wear down due to normal wear and tear on them. When the
cartilage in the joints breaks down, bone replaces it and the joints become
larger and more rigid. The small joints of the hand as well as the larger
weight-bearing joints of the hip, knees, and spine are affected.
Treatment & Prevention
Consult your physician to obtain an assessment of the progression of the
osteoarthritis. You may be referred to a specialist, and medication (perhaps
aspirin or Tylenol) may be recommended. Moderate exercise with short periods of
rest may be suggested. Long periods of rest may increase stiffness.
The amount of strain and weight on a joint may be reduced by:
Weight control
Good posture
Use of a walker or cane
