About Depression

This illness is more than just feeling sad at times due to life changes such as death of a loved one, moving to a new location, or physical illness. Some depression is normal and is a part of everyone's life. If the sadness is severe or long-lasting, a medical evaluation is needed. Depression can be a side-effect of certain medicines, illnesses, or alcoholism. It is also a disease in and of itself and needs to be treated as such. Depression affects moods, body, behavior, and mind.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

  • Ongoing feelings of sadness and hopelessness

  • Loss of interest in daily activities

  • Sleep disturbance

  • Loss of energy

  • Crying or tearfulness

  • Poor appetite or weight loss

  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Treatment

  • Evaluation by a physician

  • A psychiatric evaluation may be recommended

  • Antidepressant medications along with psychotherapy
