About Emphysema

Emphysema is a progressive condition caused by the lungs becoming stretched and losing their elasticity, thereby interfering with breathing. The increased effort required by the heart causes it to overwork, and the circulatory system is affected as the disease progresses. Emphysema is related to heavy cigarette smoking, air pollution, and chronic bronchitis.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

  • Quick, shallow breathing

  • Tiredness

Treatment

Progression of the disease may be slowed down by:

  • Following medical orders

  • Respiratory therapy may be recommended

  • Rest between activities -- pace yourself

  • Prevent infections such as a cold, flu, or other respiratory infections
