About Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump blood vigorously enough to supply the tissues. Arteriosclerosis, hypertension, and coronary artery disease are factors which may cause CHF.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

  • Loss of energy

  • Difficulty breathing (often severe)

  • Swelling of ankles

  • Nausea

  • Loss of appetite

  • Stomach pain

  • Confusion

Treatment & Prevention

Consult a physician if warning signs occur. Medication may be prescribed along with:

  • Rest

  • Control of weight

  • Reduced salt in diet

  • Stress avoidance

  • Strict compliance with medication instructions

  • Follow-up with visits or telephone calls to your physician
